About the concept
Tales from the Golden Age aims to be an unconventional subjective history of the late communist times in Romania told through its urban myths from the perspective of simple people. We, Romanians, consider urban legends to be true stories that were told from mouth to mouth. They were the main topic of gossip and debate in the long cues for food. Humor is what kept Romanians alive and Tales from the Golden Age aims to re-capture that mood.
The project aims to re-create in a nostalgic and evocative way the times of our youth during the eighties, through music, language habits, objects and quoting stereotypes of that age.

![Director’s Statement]()
4 month, 3 weeks and 2 days is, first of all, for me, a story about personal choices. It is also a story about the subtle and often invisible consequences of indoctrination. It talks about friendship, responsibility and love. But it is mainly a story about abortion – set in a period when this was seen as an act of freedom and protest against the communist regime that banned abortion in the attempt of growing the number of disciplined working hands.
I remember this very clearly from my twenties: there was no moral issue about abortion – the biggest worry was that you could have been caught. It happened often that women died in the process but we spend very little time thinking about that.

![Synopsis]()
OTILIA and GABITA share the same room in a student dormitory. They are colleagues at the University in this small town in Romania, during the last years of communism. Otilia rents a room in a cheap hotel. In the afternoon, they are going to meet a certain Mr. Bebe. Gabita is pregnant, abortion is illegal and none of them have passed through something like this before.
The film belongs to a larger project called: Tales from the Golden Age – a subjective history of communism in Romania through its urban legends. The project’s aim is to talk about that period with no direct reference to communism but only through different stories focused on personal options in a time of misfortunes that people had to live like normal times.
